Long-Term Statistical Relationships in Political Science: An Analysis Based on Fractional Integration and Cointegration
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper we use new statistical methods to examine the connection between economic expectations and support for the government in the U.S.A. For this purpose, we analyse the order of integration for Congressional Approval and Economic Expectations from a fractional point of view. The results show that though both individual series can be specified in terms of fractional processes, the unit root cannot statistically be rejected, which is consistent with other empirical works in these variables. The possibility of cointegration is also examined from a fractional viewpoint, and the results strongly reject the hypothesis of cointegration. Thus, both series are nonstationary, and there is no linkage between them in the long run, according to an error correction equilibrium relationship. JEL Classification: C22

Not Just for Cointegration: Error Correction Models with Stationary Data
The error correction model is generally thought to be isomorphic to integrated data and the modeling of cointegrated processes, and as such, is considered inappropriate for stationary data. Given that many political time series are not integrated, analysts are unable to take advantages of the error correction model’s ability to capture both long and short-term dynamics in a single statistical m...
متن کاملFractional Integration and Cointegration in US Financial Time Series Data
This paper examines several US monthly financial time series data using fractional integration and cointegration techniques. The univariate analysis based on fractional integration aims to determine whether the series are I(1) (in which case markets might be efficient) or alternatively I(d) with d < 1, which implies mean reversion. The multivariate framework exploiting recent developments in fr...
متن کاملDeterminants of Healthcare Expenditure in Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Countries: Evidence from Panel Cointegration Tests
Background Over the last decade there has been an increase in healthcare expenditures while at the same time the inequity in distribution of resources has grown. These two issues have urged the researchers to review the determinants of healthcare expenditures. In this study, we surveyed the determinants of health expenditures in Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) countries. Methods We us...
متن کاملThe Effects of Economic, Financial and Political Developments on Iran’s CO2 Emissions
This study examines dynamic interrelationships and causality relationships among CO2 emissions, economic, political and financial variables over the period of 1971-2011 for the case of Iran as one of the top CO2 emitting countries in the world. The results of ARDL and Johansen cointegration approaches confirm the existence of long run relationship among CO2 emissions, energy consumption, GDP, f...
متن کاملTesting the long run neutrality of money based on the seasonal cointegration theory: The case of Iran
This article uses seasonal integration and co integration techniques to test the hypothesis of neutrality of money, using data from the Iranian economy. Seasonal data for the three variables of money supply, output and prices show that (increase in) money supply and the price level are co integrated at zero frequency, but one does not see such a relationship between (increase in) money supply a...
